Statement on the PE Newspapers Boycott
30 July 1992
The African National Congress notes with concern the developments that have resulted in a boycott of two Eastern Cape newspapers.
Press freedom is vital to ensure an informed society, and this includes publication of newspapers of widely differing opinions and perspectives.
The ANC has, in discussion with the Eastern Cape region, urged that meetings be held with the newspapers editorial and journalist staff to find ways to address the issues raised and speedily resolve the problem.
The ANC unequivocally condemns any intimidation of journalists, newspaper vendors or other media workers, as well as the burning of newspapers. The ANC will always work to ensure the safety of journalists within our communities, and their right to publish news and events as they occur.
