ANC welcomes decision by doctors to return to work

3 July 2009

The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes the decision by KwaZulu-Natal doctors to return to work, ending the strike, which affected public health care delivery in that province.

We have maintained that while empathising with the striking doctors in KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of the country, public health care and patients suffered due to the strike. Against a background of global recession, the ANC-led Government has shown commitment to address the doctors’ wage dispute by coming up with an affordable offer.

In the interest creating stability in South Africa’s public health institutions, the ANC encourages doctors still on strike in other provinces to return to work.

The ANC would like to thank COSATU President Sdumo Dlamini, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize, MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, Dr Cameron McIntosh and Dr Thandeka Mazibuko for resolving the crisis through negotiations.
