ANC urges youth to seize the weekend

8 November 2008

The African National Congress urges all South Africans, particularly the youth, to seize the weekend, and go out to register to vote at their nearest voting station.

The ANC has been monitoring activity at the 19,000 voting stations around the country during the course of the morning. While there have been areas with significant interest, turnout in many parts of the country has been slow.

Among the main challenge identified is that many people don`t know which voting station they should go to, and many have reported difficulties accessing the IEC`s internet, SMS line and call centre due to a surge in demand.

Those people who are unable to get through to the IEC are encouraged to ask their neighbours where they`ve registered, and to go to the voting stations before 5pm this afternoon.

All the voting stations will open again tomorrow, Sunday 9 November 2008, from 8am to 5pm.

The ANC calls on all South Africans to be part of shaping the future, and to act now to make sure they can vote.
