ANC supports SABC appointment process

23 January 2018

The ANC Study Group on Communications notes and supports the process of appointment of senior executives at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) undertaken by the SABC Board. The Minister of Communications, comrade Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, along with the SABC Board, met with the Portfolio Committee on Communications in Parliament today to brief the committee on the process of appointment of senior executives and to clarify the role of the minister in the appointment of the SABC's Chief Operating Officer (COO).

The Minister and the Board clarified that the appointment of the COO is not final as there is a vetting process currently underway and there was no interference on the part of government in the process. This follows the North Gauteng High Court judgement in October 2017 which directed that government should not interfere with the process of the appointment of senior executives at the public broadcaster.

"As the ANC, we do not see anything wrong with cabinet's decision to appeal the judgement for clarity on some issues, especially on the role of the minister as a representative of government," said the Whip of the ANC Study Group on Communications Hon. Mziwamadoda Kalako.

The ANC patiently awaits the finalisation of all processes to ensure the appointment of qualified and deserving candidates to head our public broadcaster as senior executives.

Issued by the Whip of the ANC Study Group on Communications, comrade Mziwamadoda Kalako.
