ANC statement on the 2008 US Presidential Election

5 November 2008

The African National Congress extends warmest congratulations to Barack Obama on his victory in the US presidential election, and to the American people on a successful and historic poll.

The ANC expects South Africa to maintain its strong relationship of mutual respect and cooperation with the incoming US administration.

During his recent visit to the United States, ANC President Jacob Zuma discussed this relationship with key stakeholders in government and politics, business, academia and media.

Among other things, the ANC delegation held discussions with foreign policy advisers from the Obama campaign, focusing on the priorities of an incoming administration with respect to Africa.

The ANC is confident that the Obama administration will work to strengthen ties between the US and Africa, building on development initiatives already in place, forging a genuine partnership to tackle the challenges facing the continent.

It is confident that the Obama administration will work with international institutions and forums to ensure a peaceful resolution of conflict and a multilateral response to global challenges.
