ANC sends its condolences on the passing of Ms Iko Mash

22 July 2017

The African National Congress extends its most sincere condolences to the family and friends of talented actress, socialite Iko Mash who passed away yesterday following a short illness. As a movement, we are deeply saddened by their loss and share their grief on the passing of so extraordinary a person.

Iko Mash lived her life boldly, courageously and, as has been said, amazingly unapologetically. She was, in her own words, "spiritually grounded", ambitious and dedicated to her craft. With the many different roles she played, Iko used her life's work to shine the spotlight on and spearhead the struggles of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Community.

She was a powerfully irreverent force that demonstrated to many that one needed permission from no one to reject society's heteronormative narrative. She was a trailblazer and torchbearer for expressively living according to the dictates of one's conscience and one's beliefs.

Ms Mash made our country that more colorful and we are that much poorer for her passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends and may they find solace in her very full life during this time of grief and sorrow.
