ANC mourns the death of Cde Petrus Mashishi

5 July 2018

The African National Congress has learnt with shock and sadness of the passing of the Founding President of the South African Municipal Workers Union, Cde Petrus Mashishi, who passed away at the age of 72 at his home in Soweto this morning.

Cde Petrus Mashishi  was elected President at SAMWU's inaugural Congress in 1987. He fought with great resolve and tenacity for municipal workers' rights for two decades until his retirement in 2007.  He enjoyed deep respect of the workers and the entire Congress Movement.

The ANC dips its revolutionary banner and conveys its sincere condolences to the Mashishi family,  close friends, leadership and membership of the municipal workers union and all fellow comrades in the struggle for emancipation of workers who are affected and touch by this untimely loss. We share their grief and their loss is our loss.

May his soul find eternal rest. Hamba Kahle Qabane
