ANC media statement on the outcome of by-elections

13 August 2009

The African National Congress (ANC) is pleased by yesterday`s (12 August 2009) by-election results contested in wards covering KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

We are particularly encouraged to have gained ground in KwaZulu-Natal where we won Ladysmith from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). In the seven municipal by-elections, the only ward, which changed hands, was Ladysmith.

The ANC retained Poffader in the Northern Cape with an overwhelming majority. Overall results were broadly in line with those of the 2009 elections, with the ANC gaining ground in areas that have traditionally been IFP-held.

We look forward with confidence to next month`s second round of by-elections to take place in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

The ANC reaffirms its call on communities to help ensure vibrant and effective local government by taking part in elections whenever the opportunity arises. Only through casting their ballots in elections, can active communities hold elected leaders at municipal level to account.
