ANC hosts massive birthday bash for Madiba

29 July 2008

The African National Congress is hosting a massive birthday celebration for former President Nelson Mandela on Saturday, 2 August 2008 at Loftus Versfeld in Tshwane.

The rally, which is expected to draw around 60,000 people, will be the one opportunity in an extensive programme of birthday events for ordinary South Africans to pay tribute to Madiba in person. The rally will be attended by people from across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.

The rally will also be attended by over 2,000 guests representing all sectors of South African society and representatives from the international community.

The celebration will be addressed by ANC President Jacob Zuma and former ANC Presidents Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki - a rare moment in the ANC`s 96-year history, when three presidents of the movement share the same platform.

The rally will include a cultural programme in which a number of South African artists pay tribute to this outstanding son of the soil. The programme will start at 10h00.

The ANC invites all South Africans to join us as we honour Madiba for a life spent in the service of his people, for his remarkable vision and courage, and for his tireless devotion to the cause of freedom.

At the same time, we will pledge ourselves to uphold the values and principles to which he has dedicated his life. On that day we will make a solemn promise to Madiba that we will continue his struggle for freedom, to achieve a better life for all South Africans.

As we celebrate Madiba`s 90th birthday, we also celebrate the achievements of our movement and people. As we honour Madiba, we also honour the other heroes and heroines of our nation who contributed so much to the achievement of democracy.
